Athleisure

According to Wikipedia: “Athleisure is a trend in fashion in which clothing designed for workouts and other athletic activities is worn in other settings, such as during work, casual or social occasions. Athleisure outfits are yoga pants, tights and leggings that “look like athletic wear” and are characterized as “fashionable, dressed up sweats and exercise clothing”. The idea is that gym clothes are supposedly making their way out of the gym and becoming a larger part of people’s everyday wardrobes.”

I couldn’t have said it any better and that basically sums up the athleisure trend. I am not usually one to wear sweats or yoga pants in public (unless I am going to a fitness class or for a run), but I’ve seen a lot of online bloggers and fashionistas embracing this trend.

This very casual look started with the black polyester/spandex Nike jacket.Blog1 The zippers on the sleeves and pockets added interesting detail. This coat would work equally well with a dressier outfit since it has a faux-leather vibe. The grey joggers from City Sports were comfortable and practical with their soft fit and convenient pockets. The coral and grey striped lightweight sweatshirt was by Sonoma, a Kohl’s brand.

With an outfit like this, you needed equally casual accessories: a simple silver tassel necklace, Samba Classic sneakers by Adidas and a colorful, roomy backpack (originally from Target).Blog2

With consumers wanting to be comfortable and stylish, I see the trend growing, with many designers already featuring specific athleisure lines in their collections. But, you can easily recreate these looks with pieces you find at Goodwill Keystone Area stores.Blog3

Classic Combo

Our weather lately has been to say the least, unpredictable. 70s one day; 40s the next. But it is still winter and we do live in Pennsylvania. While I’m ready for warm weather, I still have a few great outfits to share on the Goodwill Keystone Area blog that are more suited to cooler weather.

This is one of my favorite classic combos: a sweater dress, boots and a structured bag. Blog2 Some people think dresses are fancy and fussy, but I think they are so simple. It’s one piece, a few accessories and you are out the door – no mixing and matching pants or skirts and a top!

This cotton/rayon black and red patterned sweater dress from Max Studio (a brand run by Leon Max who called his company “Max Studio” because he couldn’t think up another name!) is so comfortable, yet stylish. Blog1 The zigzagged-stripes are flattering and I really enjoy that the color combo was easy to accessorize.

The boots were a spectacular find: Kate Spade! Blog3 The black, stiletto shape will be timeless and the $9.97 I paid would translate to approximately $400 in the retail world! I loved the gold buckle detail and the soft leather construction. These boots are fashion staples that could stay in my wardrobe forever. Rounding out this look was a multi-strand, gold studded necklace and a spikey gold bracelet. (Bag was my own).

It would be easy to dress this look up with a blazer on top of the dress or conversely, you could make it more casual with a denim jacket and simplified accessories. Having classic pieces that you reach for time and time again, are well worth the space in your closet!

Dress: $3.95
Boots: $9.97

Spring Fever

We’ve been pampered with some very un-winter like temperatures lately and my family and I decided to take advantage of the balmy weather and head to the Chesapeake Bay area last weekend. Of course, I planned a spring-inspired blog outfit to spend the day near the water.

I’ve been receiving my fashion magazines and as usual, florals and denim are perpetually popular. I don’t usually wear yellow, but this butter-colored delicate floral print blouse by Apostrophe (A Sears brand) grabbed my attention in the store.Blgo3 SpriI was tired of looking at sweaters, so the yellow, white and brown pattern caught my eye. I could pair this blouse with white jeans and sandals later in the season.

Today I paired it with cropped boot-cut jeans by J. Crew. Blog1 Jeans from this brand can range to over $100 so at $6.50 they were a great bargain. They have a higher waist, which seems to be more popular in the last few seasons vs. the extremely low cut waist of the late 90s and early 2000s. I’m petite so usually cropped jeans don’t look as short on me, but these fell perfectly with the top of the brown, heeled boots from Mossimo.Blog2 I like their sturdy lug sole and they were good for walking around town. The double zipper detail was a nice touch as well. They are neutral enough that they will work with a variety of outfits this coming year.

Accessorizing the look was a silver double rhinestone strand necklace from Chico’s and a small rattan and leather clutch from Coach. I’d estimate this necklace at about $30-$40 for full retail at Chico’s. And everyone knows anything from Coach is not inexpensive, so at $4.97 was a real steal! The whole look was casual and fun and perfect for a day away.Blog4

Goodwill Keystone Area stores are starting to stock spring merchandise, so be sure and pick up some floaty floral blouses, bright colors and sandals. Spring will be here before you know it!

Blouse: $3.95
Jeans: $6.50
Bag: $4.97
Boots: $4.99 (Half off day)

And the Oscar goes to…

OK, I wasn’t invited to the Oscars, but if I was, you know I would get my award-show outfit at Goodwill! Shopping at Goodwill Keystone Area stores means you can always be voted best-dressed and thriftiest fashionista.

Occasionally in your life, you need a formal dress and spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a dress you might only wear once is not economical, unless you are an A-list actress.

I found this new-with-tags White House Black Market black satin cocktail dress earlier this winter.image007 I didn’t have any dressy events coming up, but at only $7.50 for the set (it came with a matching ¾ sleeved bolero jacket), I couldn’t pass it up.

The original price was almost $200 for the set. The dress is well-made and the ruching in the front is figure-flattering as is the knee length. I added some bling with black velvet stilettos, which feature rhinestone bows. These Charlotte Russe shoes also were new-with-tags (retail price was $34.99), but I paid just $6.97. image010 The sequined and beaded bag from Loft added the right amount of sparkle for $4.97. image011 (Necklace was my own; “Oscar” was my daughter’s cheerleading award).

image009 While you may think of Goodwill for your everyday basics such as jeans or business attire, they have a great assortment of formal and semi-formal wear (think Proms or weddings!)

Dress set: $7.50
Shoes: $6.97
Bag: $4.97

Three Piece ReDesign

Materials and tools needed:

  • Three tops with cool elements and a long jacket zipper, one that separates at the bottom
  • Sewing kit
  • Sharp scissors
  • Lots of Pins

Finding the Three Tops at Goodwill:
Blog1 I thought these pieces had such a great color blend when put together. First, I found the sweater and then, I walked around the store with the sweater in hand looking for anything item that would complement it. Spare no department in your quest, men’s, kids, even furniture (think fabric) are all fair game. I came across the plain men’s sweatshirt. The camo hoodie was last. The hoodie and sweater don’t really look good together, but the sweatshirt brings them together. They definitely needed to be combined. I also had a long jacket zipper that I had saved from a previous redo. But how to combine them???.

Here’s a Tip:
I look for details in the clothing pieces that really catch my eye. For example, I love the neckline on the sweater. And of course, who doesn’t like a touch of camo, especially a hoodie.

Establish a Foundation:
I never like all the extra fabric under the arms that always comes with an oversized sweatshirt, so the first thing I did was I turned it inside out and pinned some of the bulk out. Blog9
Then I sewed it up, and I made sure to really tapered the new seam to the old side seam, so that it doesn’t fall off the edge abruptly and leave a weird gather.

If you are trying this, I suggest that you try it on and redo if needed. Cut out the excess fabric and turn it back to the right side.

Now, we have a main foundation piece.

Adding On:
First, I went to the sweater and cut off the neckline collar just below the seam that attaches it to the body.

Blog2 It didn’t fray too much and it made a really cute ruffle which I didn’t expect…happy accident! Then, I put it in place on the foundation sweatshirt. No pins yet. The little pockets from the sweater where great, so I cut them out leaving about an inch of sweater body all around. Then on the body, they went without pins. The hoodie was next. I don’t like sweatshirt wrist bands. They are always so long and clunky. So I cut them off the foundation piece. The wrist bands on the camo hoodie where much softer. I cut them off with about 3 inches of sleeve. Placing them on the foundation body they looked good. I took off the hoodie and just placed it on the neckline area. I wasn’t sure if I liked it. It conflicted with the sweater neckline (I decided on that later). Then I took off the waist band of the foundation body. I don’t like them either they always scrunch up in the wrong places. I cut off some strips of camo and will use that instead, Blog10 Not bad! The ruffled strip you see in the picture is the foundation sweatshirt waist band. I like to use them as a kind of scarf or tie around the neck. With the zipper in place, I stand back and fuss with the whole thing. Sometimes I have to walk away for a day or so I have fresh eyes when I return. After all that cutting and planning, it is hard to see anything!

Eventually, I decided the hoodie and neck tie have to go. I am happy with everything else. Now all I have to do is put it together. I started with the zipper. It is important to get it centered correctly. It looks like a mistake if it is off a bit. If you want to make it off than make sure it is really off, then it looks like a design element. I used the side seams to get a center and used a tape measure and some chalk or marker to get a center line. Next, I placed the zipper on the line and pin it down. It is Ok if it is a little too long or short. If you are trying it, do not cut the zipper opening yet. Once you get the zipper pinned in place and it looks good, go ahead and pin everything else down. Use lots and lots of pins. They will truly help you keep the material from shifting.

Almost There:
Looks Great! Almost there. Blog11 This is the relaxing part. Get your needle and thread or sewing machine and go to work. Don’t worry about being perfect just jump in. I started with the zipper. Once it was secure, I cut it open. It makes it much easier to sew the rest once you can open it up. Continue On! I just kind of wander around at this point.

All Done:
Once everything is secure you can trim some of the excess material off if needed. I like to give it a good steam press. I use a kitchen towel over it if I’m not sure what kind of material it is. I have melted a project before and it isn’t pretty. All Done! Wear and enjoy.
Blog6

Some Tips for sewing stretchy material like a sweater:
If sewing on a machine and working with a sweater, the feed dogs* will grab the sweater and pull it forward which will create a wavy appearance in the sweater seam. That might be a good look but if that is not what you are going for, put a piece of newspaper or parchment paper under the sweater and sew with that. The paper is slippery so the feed dogs will not grab and pull at the sweater.
After sewing the paper will just rip off .Blog7

*Feed dogs on a sewing machine are the little teeth like things that travel up and down in a rotating manner just under the sewing area.Blog12

I look for elements in a piece that are attractive or that catch my eye. I then look for pieces that will blend with it. Sometimes I go with an idea in mind, sometimes I just get inspiration from the pieces I come across. Be fearless with your scissors! Sew outside the lines and combine the unlikely. Trust what you like.

Casual Luxuries

Spending over a $1,100 on a casual outfit seems a bit ridiculous to a thrifty fashionista, especially when it comes to a simple outfit such as a sweater, jeans, boots and a bag. If you’re shopping at the mall, it would be quite easy to drop that much cash for one higher-end look. But, not at Goodwill!

I have started to pay attention to labels when shopping and finding high-end brands has become a new goal of mine. For this blog post, I think the numbers speak for themselves:

Eddie Bauer goose down jacket: $200
Retail: $200
Goodwill: $9.50Blog

Tommy Bahama sweater (found NWT):
Retail: $138.00
Goodwill: $35.00Blog2

Marc by Marc Jacobs boots
Retail: $250.00
Goodwill: $6.97Blog4

Cole Haan bag:
Retail: $350.00
Goodwill: $9.97Blog1

Rag & Bone jeans:
Retail: $215.00
Goodwill: $6.50Blog3

Retail Total: $1,153
Goodwill Total: $67.94

I paid less than 6% of the retail value! Shopping at Goodwill Keystone Area stores lets you dress comfortably and casually, even if the labels are anything but basic. The fabrics and finishes on premium denim and leather brands such as Cole Haan and Marc Jacobs make it worth the effort to locate higher-end brands on the racks at your local Goodwill store. But, it is worth the investment in your time to upgrade your closet.

Avant Garde ReDesign by Joanne Schultz

When you head to Renaissance Faires, there are always a cast of hundreds of colorfully costumed characters. I enjoy making costumes for my daughter and the challenge of redesigning clothes from Goodwill into clothing appropriate for any medieval festival!

The garment I created was my interpretation of leather/lace Avant Garde.

I used the lace from the gown, dyed it jet black.ReDesign6 Added pieces of leather to build a corset.ReDesign5 ReDesign7 I also used the leather to create bows, straps and the lace-up boot covers. ReDesign4 The gown I hemmed to be a high/low and added the other dress underneath to add more volume. ReDesign8 ReDesign3 All the items where purchased at my local Goodwill store. I’ve been creating re-design items for many years. I like making things into a different look, by bringing life back into a new design.

100th Post

It’s hard to believe, but this is my 100th post for the Goodwill Keystone Area fashion blog! There have been numerous shopping trips to a variety of Goodwill stores (and there are so many I haven’t visited yet), lots of clothing and accessories, inspirations and ideas and so many photos (modeling is much harder than it looks!)!

I’ve made new friends who were blog fans and have become blog models. I’ve convinced my family and friends to help me shop and sometimes, model for me. I have more ideas for fashion just waiting to happen. And it wouldn’t be possible without the good people of Goodwill. From the management to the stores, I have enjoyed being involved with such a wonderful organization and am proud to have been given the opportunity to be the Goodwill Keystone Area Blogger.

Today’s look is highlighting a fun look for Valentine’s Day. The bright red and cream boucle blazer is reminiscent of Chanel, but this version by Talbots was much more affordable.image011 I loved combining the structure and flair of the fitted blazer with slouchy jeans and loafers. The cream blouse is from Ann Taylor and the jeans are from 7 For All Mankind.image010

Adding some bling to the look, I layered on a multi-strand gold cable chain and a DKNY canvas and leather bag. image012 No matter what your plans are for Valentine’s Day, why not add a little love to your outfit with some pink or red. Give me a shopping trip to Goodwill over a fancy dinner or flowers any day!

50 Shades of Faux Fun – Part 2

There’s a certain movie coming out soon that is featuring lots of shades of grey, so I thought an outfit featuring that hue would be a timely choice.

My look started with this fitted grey herringbone dress from Banana Republic. Today Banana Republic is known for it’s chic, classic clothing, but according to Wikipedia: “It was founded in 1978 with the name “Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company” with a safari theme; in 1983, Gap purchased the company, changed the name to simply “Banana Republic”, and gave it a more upscale image.”

The ¾ length sleeve on this dress makes it appropriate almost all year round.Blog19
I paired it with a dramatic silver and gold waterfall necklace.Blog18 I love this necklace and it’s one of my favorite pieces of jewelry from Goodwill. It certainly makes a statement! To lighten up the serious tone of the dress, I added this faux fur bag. Faux fur isn’t something you want to wear all the time, but it adds a fun element to your wardrobe.

The star of this outfit (in my mind) is the boots!Blog20 I found these at the Goodwill store in Reading (Muhlenberg), PA and while they were priced at $25, I knew from the style and feel of the construction that they were worth the investment. I didn’t realize until I investigated them when I got home that they were Frye boots. Frye has been on my “holy grail” of fashion finds since I started thrifting. According to it’s own website, Frye is the oldest continuously operated shoe company in the United States! They retail for approximately $300 and you can still find this style available online. The dark charcoal grey makes them extremely versatile and you could also pair them with skirts, skinny jeans or leggings.

Grey can be a cool or a warm color, but it is always a perfect choice when dressing for the office. Add some unique accessories and you’ll be rocking this “Hazy Shade of Winter”!

Boots: $25.00

Just Faux Fun

Faux fur is a look that tends to show up in the cooler months when chilly weather sets in. Vogue magazine reported that it was still going to be a popular trend for fall and winter of 2017. Pieces occasionally pop up at Goodwill and they are always a fun faux find.

This soft acrylic/polyester blend vest by Trocacci Blu in various shades of beige and gray was a cozy choice for a cool day. Blog2 I paired it with corduroy skinny jeans in black and beige and a black v-neck blouse, both from Ann Taylor Loft. It would look equally as chic thrown on over a denim dress or with blue jeans and boots.

I rolled my skinny jeans, mostly because I am petite, but also because cuffed skinny pants and ankle boots is something I am seeing all over the fashion magazines and around town.Blog3 My black suede boots from Indigo by Clarks are designed for comfort, yet are stylish with their stacked heel and lace-up front.

My accessories include a beige and black canvas bag from Thirty One, a direct sale company founded in 2003. Blog1 According to their founder, Cindy Monroe: “Not only do our fashionable, functional products make life easier – they also help independent business owners across the country support their families and reach their dreams.” I wrapped up this look with a gold and black fringed necklace.
While I would not cover myself in faux fur, a few pieces here and there make a nice winter accent. I’ll be featuring a faux fur bag in my next post!

Note: All items except the blouse were purchased on 50% off Winter Sale day in January. Be sure to keep an eye out for their next sale and they are currently featuring $5 off a $30 purchase for Rewards members. See website for details!
