Goodwill accepts donations of cars, trucks, boats, ATVs, RVs, campers and motorcycles. Your donation will be used directly in the Wheels for Work program or sold and the proceeds used to support Goodwill's mission. For your document protection, Goodwill is a licensed used car dealer. Your vehicle’s title remains secure and confidential throughout the entire donation and re-sale process.
The quickest way to donate is to bring your vehicle and title into one of our convenient locations. Free towing or pick up is available; some restrictions apply.
There are two categories of motor vehicles accepted by Goodwill: 1.) Mechanically sound, or, 2.) Not drivable.
The value of the donation may be tax deductible. Please refer to IRS guidelines and your tax advisor for specific guidance. Goodwill is not allowed to provide tax advice on value of a specific donation. Goodwill does provide the donor with a thank you letter that lists the trade-in and retail value of the vehicle as published in used car guides or online at www.kbb.com. The actual value of your donation may vary based on mechanical and physical condition.
Goodwill relies on the self-report of the donor as to condition of the vehicle. With a vehicle that fits the description of mechanically sound, inspected or able to pass inspection, we accept the donation and use the vehicle in the Wheels for Work program. Goodwill transfers vehicles to individuals receiving service who meet specific income eligibility standards and require personal transportation for employment or to training that leads to employment.
Upon donation, the vehicle is given a thorough safety inspection. Minor repairs are performed, usually on a pro-bono basis, by local garages. As a licensed used car dealer, Goodwill holds the title to the vehicle and transfers it to the Wheels-for-Work recipient.
Usually we ask that the vehicle be driven to a Goodwill location for donation. In some cases Goodwill staff will pick up the vehicle using a dealer license plate or schedule to have the vehicle towed to Goodwill.
This type of vehicle is still a benefit to Goodwill only if the proceeds from selling it wholesale are greater than the cost of title transfer and towing (currently about $75). However, Goodwill reserves the right to reject any vehicle donation offer. Upon donation, Goodwill transfers the title into its name and schedules a towing service to pick up the vehicle. The vehicle is towed directly to a vehicle auction or sold on the wholesale market.
It usually takes between 5 to 10 workdays from the donation to Goodwill to pick-up by the towing service. Please plan on at least that long for the removal of the vehicle. The proceeds of the sale are used to support Wheels-for-Work and other Goodwill services designed to assist individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment achieve independence and employability.
